New additions to Sunderland Ladies - Becky Bass, Brogan McHugh and Lauren Briggs

Sunderland Ladies have made their first additions to the squad, as they step up their preparations for the Women’s Super League in March 2014.

England College midfielder Lauren Briggs joins the Club from Durham, together with England under 19 attacking wide player, Becky Bass from Leeds United and Brogan McHugh who has stepped up from Sunderland’s Centre of Excellence.

“I'm delighted all three girls have decided to join us.” said Sunderland Manager Mick Mulhern.  “All are young players who are very much learning the game and therefore Mel (Assistant First Team Coach) and I can have a positive influence on their future development. I've watched Lauren several times over recent months, having first seen her play a few years ago in junior football. She has developed into a decent centre midfield player at Cestria and also as a student in Mel's Gateshead College team. I’m looking forward to working with Lauren and helping her progress further.”

“Becky is a good player,” he added.  “She has the potential to improve and that was important in the decision to join the Club. I love attacking players with pace and Becky has plenty of that. I am sure we can work with her to develop her all round game further, so she can become an integral part of our squad.”

As for Brogan, Mel and I worked with her last season in the under 17 Centre of Excellence.  She captained our side and has a real thirst for knowledge. We recommended Brogan to England and she has been in their U-17's squad ever since. Brogan is one for the future, but I believe in giving youth a chance and my challenge to Brogan is to play her way into my first team group in the coming months.”

All three girls were delighted to join Sunderland.

“I’m really excited for the new challenge ahead,” said Lauren.  “And really delighted to be joining Sunderland.”

Becky commented, “I'm looking forward to a new challenge and experience with a new team and especially looking forward to the new season.”

Brogan was also excited to play for Sunderland.  “I was so happy to have been asked to step up from the Centre,” she said.   “I just want to train harder and try to push for a first team place.”

I'm delighted all three girls have decided to join us.
