Sunderland Ladies endured a frustrating afternoon at the Hetton Centre, but two second half substitutions proved inspirational as the Wearsiders fought back from a goal down to take the points in a highly entertaining encounter.
Sunderland began brightly as Bentley and Holmes tested the visiting defence early on. But it was Stockport who broke the deadlock after 14 minutes when Caroline Price took advantage of a static Sunderland defence, hoping for an offside decision, to calmly slot home. Two minutes later the visitors were awarded a penalty and for the second week running keeper Helen Alderson produced a great save from the resulting spot kick. As Sunderland’s confidence grew, Emma Bentley was proving to be a handful up front and a great turn saw her shot go narrowly wide as the first half came to a close.

The second half saw Sunderland step up the pace and a fine move saw Holmes switch play to new signing Nichola Devine whose cross was returned into the box by Bentley for O’Brien’s shot to be cleared off the line. Further efforts from Holmes, Danby and Bentley were blocked as Sunderland’s frustrations continued. The home side were asking all the questions in attack but found the Stockport defence very solid. Danby, O’Brien and Lee all had efforts scrambled away as time was running out. With just 4 minutes remaining Substitute Jess Clark won the ball in Midfield and her powerful run went unchecked as she hammered the ball into the roof of the net. Just over a minute later it was another sub, Jess Havelock who latched on to Clark’s cross to drive home what proved to be a well deserved winner ... FT... A relieved Mick Mulhern said after the game, “I’m delighted with the second half performance. We got the bit between our teeth and put Stockport under a lot of pressure. Their keeper kept them in the game, but we never doubted the goals would come. That result keeps us in contention with the leaders and our squad is getting stronger so hopefully we can push on from here.”
