Sunderland went into the game looking for their 5th consecutive League win as their climb up the table continues. The home side began very brightly as they tested Tranmere with early efforts from O’Brien and Lee. Sunderland weren’t to be denied however, as they took the lead on 10 minutes following good play through the middle. The ball broke to Natalie Gutteridge who controlled well before turning inside to hit a fierce shot across goal and into the top corner. Sunderland were in complete control and playing some fine flowing football but were finding the visiting defence in a stubborn mood. Sarah Danby went close after 35 minutes as she broke clear only to see her shot go just wide of the upright. HT… Sunderland Women 1 vs 0 Tranmere Rovers Ladies
The second half began with Sunderland determined to put the game out of the reach of the visitors but were continually denied by good defending and shear bad luck as O’Brien saw her shot shave the woodwork in the early stages. Then good work by Nicola Devine down the left saw her cross hammered goalward by Lucy Bronze only for the keeper to pull off a fine stop. Efforts by O’Brien, Gutteridge, Danby and Devine went close as Tranmere were confined to only the occasional breakaway. Sunderland sealed the points on 76 minutes when a well directed Bannon free kick was met perfectly by Bronze to head home the second goal of the game. Danby and Lee both went close before long term injury victim Jody Burnip made a welcome substitute appearance as Sunderland finished comfortable winners to go joint 2nd in the league. Manager Mick Mulhern was again full of praise for his team : “We started off well but let them back into the game instead of finishing them off. The second half saw us getting stronger as the game wore on and it was only a matter of time before we scored again. My only concern is we did not press home our dominance with the goals we deserved, but we are definitely on the up.”
