Win at Preston . . . Preston North End 1 - 2 Sunderland
News
Sunderland travelled to Preston for the second time in two weeks; having sealed a narrow victory in the first encounter, Sunderland knew it was always going to be a tough test.

Preston started the brighter of the two, but Sunderland soon came into their own when Gutteridge came close on two separate occasions. Sunderland continued to push forward with a Lee shot from just outside the box, but unfortunately it went agonisingly wide. Against the run of play Preston broke clear and when Alderson came out to clear a shot, she was unlucky to see the clearance land at the feet of a Preston player who shot from 30 yards and the ball ended up in the back of the net. HT… Preston 1-0 Sunderland
In the second half Sunderland came out knowing they had to pressure Preston in order to get something from the game. Sunderland continued to progress and nearly got their rewards, when Devine had a superb header cleared off the line and moments later the Preston keeper was called into action from a Danby strike.

Gutteridge and Danby continued to hold the ball up well and just on the hour mark, Sunderland were awarded a free kick. Bannon stepped forward to produce a screamer from 30 yards. As time progressed Sunderland went in search of a winner with Lee and O'Brien linking up well in midfield. On 75 minutes Gutteridge used great strength to hold off the defender and as she turned she was brought down in the area and a penalty was awarded. O'Brien confidently stepped up to place the ball into the back of the net and make it 2-1.

Preston hit straight back at Sunderland, looking for a late equaliser but the solid Sunderland defence stood firm. With only minutes remaining Alderson was called into action to produce a fine save to guarantee that Sunderland gained all 3 points. FT…Preston 1-2 Sunderland

Manager Mick Mulhern said: “Preston were one of the seasons early pace setters, and this was a great result. If I’m honest I thought the result was never in doubt as we took the game to Preston. We are proving hard to beat as the results have shown, this is a young squad and there are good times ahead if we continue in the same vein."

Team: Alderson, Fry (Crann), Wilson, Bannon, Holmes, Jess Clark, Lee, O’Brien, Devine (Havelock), Gutteridge, Danby. Subs: Bentley, Unwin, Jade Clark.
