Great Win for Reserves . . . Sunderland Res 3 - 0 Liverpool Res
News
On Sunday, Sunderland Women Reserves beat Liverpool Reserves 3 – 0 in the 2nd Round of the Reserve League Cup. This was a great win for the reserve team, especially after the same team were beaten 6 – 2 the previous week in a league game at Liverpool.

Liverpool started the stronger side, with lots of possession without really troubling Rachael Laws in the Sunderland goal and Sunderland’s back four of Jane Riddell, Sarah Wilson, Lyndsey Bell and Chloe Tomlinson all performing really well. As the game progressed, Sunderland began to come into the game more by winning challenges, and were rewarded on the 43rd minute when a cross into the box saw Jane Riddell popping up to put the ball into the back of the Liverpool net. Sunderland held on until half time and for the first time this season went into the half time break in the lead and keeping a clean sheet.

Both Sarah Wilson and Natalie Garrett received injuries to the head in the first half with Natalie Garrett unable to continue in the second half due to her injury. Sunderland came out the second half passing the ball better with Lauren Ramshaw, Dani Harthen and Lucy Dewar starting to dominate the midfield and with Helen Willcox and Anna Stokoe working hard on the flanks. Sunderland were rewarded in the 63rd minute with their second goal. A 25 yard free kick was superbly taken by Jane Riddell and floated over everyone into the back of the net. New signing Amanda Morton then came on for her first appearance of the season. Confidence grew within the team with the belief that they could actually win this game and this belief was rewarded when a ball over the top of the Liverpool defence saw Jody Burnip finish well for Sunderland’s 3rd goal on 72 minutes.

This was an excellent all round team performance from every player concerned and gives them something to build on for the rest of the season.

Sunderland: Laws, Riddell, Wilson, Bell, Tomlinson, Willcox, Harthen, Ramshaw, Garrett (Dewar), Stokoe (Morton), Burnip
