Run comes to an End ! . . . Tranmere Rovers 3 - 2 Sunderland
Sunderland suffered double injury time heartbreak as they fell to a surprise defeat in their visit to Tranmere Rovers Ladies yesterday. Stoppage time goals at the end of each half ended a nine game unbeaten run.
Sunderland began brightly and had much of the early play and they deservedly took the lead on 19 minutes. A Steph Bannon free kick was partially cleared and following pressure from Gemma Wilson the ball fell to Natalie Gutteridge who placed it into the bottom corner of the net. The visitors continued to dominate as Nicola Devine and Elisha Fry went close before Gutteridge was denied by a good save from the home keeper. On the stroke of half time following a rare home attack the ball bobbled on the uneven surface deceiving the defence and Tranmere grabbed an unlikely equaliser.

The visitors went ahead on 51minutes when a Gutteridge shot was saved by the home keeper only for Sarah Danby to follow up and strike the rebound home. The lead was short lived as Tranmere replied within 4 minutes. Sunderland could not clear a corner and the ball was bundled home following confusion in the visiting defence. The hosts were now clearly on top and Sunderland had keeper Helen Alderson to thank for two superb saves which kept them in the game. A late flurry saw Steph O’Brien go close following a great run by Fry before Tranmere grabbed an injury time winner from a brilliantly placed free kick.
