Win at Wednesday . . . Sheffield Wednesday 2 - 3 Sunderland
Sunderland Ladies returned to winning ways at Sheffield Wednesday yesterday after their surprise reversal last week. A scrappy, physical game gave the Wearsiders, missing influential midfield duo Rachel Lee and Lucy Bronze, a 3-2 result which should have been more convincing than the scoreline suggests.

After a very positive start the visitors took the lead on 19 mins. A cross by Abby Holmes was only partially cleared and Natalie Gutteridge cleverly turned to fire home. Sunderland extended their lead after 26 mins following a Steph Bannon free kick which caused confusion in the home defence and Gutteridge was on hand to head home at the far post.
The home side were not to be denied however, and they replied a minute later when Beth Gingell cut out a sloppy back pass and despite the brave attempts of keeper Helen Alderson, who was injured in the process, pulled a goal back. Sunderland were the more positive side as Sarah Unwin and Steph O’Brien both went close but Wednesday almost drew level on the stroke of half time as Alderson produced a fine diving save.

The second half began slowly but a Gemma Wilson header was cleared from the line following Nicola Devine’s corner. Sunderland were stunned on 56 mins when the home side drew level. The visitors failed to clear a goal bound attempt and Gingell grabbed a scrappy equaliser. At this stage the game could have gone either way but Sunderland composed themselves and regained the lead following a fine move down the left. Brilliant interplay involving Jade Clark, Wilson and Fry resulted in Holmes bursting through the defence to drive the ball into the roof of the net after 70 mins. The visitors thought they had made the game safe following a Bannon free kick which Devine turned home only to be ruled out for off side. Gutteridge went close late on with an overhead kick as Sunderland finished strongly.
