Win over Man City . . . Sunderland 2 - 0 Manchester City
Sunderland Ladies had more success than their male counterparts when they faced Manchester City Ladies at The Hetton Centre yesterday. The Wearsiders ran out 2 - 0 winners in a fiercely contested game in which they were always in charge.
The home side began brightly and almost took the lead after 5 mins when a Steph Bannon free kick was headed wide of the post by Sarah Danby. Moments later Nicola Devine's surging run through the visiting defence resulted in a fierce shot flashing wide of the post. Sunderland did take the lead on 12 mins after fine work by Devine who crossed for Abby Holmes to drive the ball into the roof of the net. City were very competitive and almost grabbed an equaliser after 25 mins but the home defence smothered the danger. As half time approached Lucy Bronze went close following good work by Danby.

City continued to probe but Sunderland were in total command now. Steph O'Brien went close before Rachel Lee shot just over following a fine link up between Holmes and Demi Stokes. In the final minute great team play resulted in an Emma Bentley strike being tipped around the post in what was the last action of a comprehensive performance by the Wearsiders.
