Sunderland Ladies played their penultimate game of the season against Aston Villa Ladies and recorded a comfortable 4-2 victory. The result was never in doubt as the home side dominated from start to finish and but for some poor finishing the margin would have been far greater.

On 2 minutes a good run on the right by Jade Clark resulted in a Natalie Gutteridge effort going narrowly wide. Although Sunderland dominated the early exchanges Villa went close when Elisha Fry’s great tackle broke to Danni Selmes who brought a point blank save from home keeper Helen Alderson. Sunderland continued to probe and went close with efforts from Steph O’Brien, Fry and Nicola Devine before a header from Gutteridge was cleared off the line. The pressure finally paid off as Clark played the ball in for Gutteridge to send Sarah Danby clear to calmly slot home from just inside the box on 36 Minutes.

The lead lasted only 90 seconds however, as Villa stuck with a long ball out of defence. Abby Cottam controlled the ball on the edge of the box and turned well to hit a superb effort into the top corner of the goal. Sunderland continued to press forward but could not break down a stubborn Villa defence despite efforts from O’Brien, Fry and Gutteridge.

Sunderland were gifted an early 2nd half goal when Fry’s hopeful punt into the box was fumbled into goal by visiting keeper Collette Wong on 47 minutes. The visitors were under constant pressure as Gutteridge and Danby went close. The home side extended their lead on 64 minutes when Clark burst through on the right to cross for Nicola Devine to hammer home from close range. Villa, however, hit back 2 minutes later with a long ball into the box, Alderson misjudged the flight and Julia Marshall headed home. This proved to be the last threat that Villa were to offer as O’Brien. Fry and Gutteridge came close before Clark fed Danby who cut in to drive a left foot shot into the corner of the net. Sunderland threatened to run riot as efforts from Lucy Bronze, Emma Bentley, Rachel Lee and Danby were somehow beaten away. A great run by Demi Stokes late on deserved better as Villa desperately held on and Sunderland wondered how their efforts did not bring a double figure return.
