MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN
As the Ladies prepare for the new season, opening away to Reading Ladies on August 17th, a familiar problem looms as large as ever.
On the playing side the club is very confident that this season will bring a strong and successful promotion push .....
..... “We have to be confident. Last season we finished 3rd when the top 3 were in a league of their own. Nottingham Forest went up as Champions and we finished just behind Lincoln, defeating them in their final game of the season, but 17 points ahead of 4th placed Newcastle. To put that into perspective 15 points behind them were relegated!
We have managed to hold on to all of the players from last term, despite the very close attentions of so called ‘bigger clubs’. Additionally we have brought in new players who will add to the strength of the squad. Behind the scenes manager Mick Mulhern has the support of an experienced coaching staff who between them cover most aspects of the scientific approach to the modern game.
However we are still faced with a formidable problem, finance. Once again we are grateful to SAFC who will provide our playing kit and have given us the use of The Hetton Centre for our home fixtures. But we are desperate to attract additional support and funding from other agencies to help fund our travels this coming season. Each away match cost several hundred pounds and if it involves an overnight stay, as will the Reading opener, then the costs are well over a thousand pounds.
We are hoping for financial assistance, however small, from local businesses or indeed individuals who realise the opportunities we provide for local talented sportswomen. All at the club provide their services free but we are forever battling to raise the necessary funding. Individual player sponsorship costs very little and details of this and other means of support, as well as all club information, can be found on our website.
We still remain the best and most successful women’s football team in the north east, we have a fervent fan base and we want to grow stronger and be recognised as the best. But we do need a little help along the way.
Good Luck to all connected with the club this season, we believe we are the best and if everyone pulls together we will be THE BEST....."
Maurice Alderson
