Following the recent call ups of both Helen Alderson and Rachael Laws to the forthcoming England training camp, the Sunderland manager has praised his two goalkeepers.

"We are very lucky to have two England international goalkeepers in our squad. The fact that they are both local girls and have been with me since their Centre of Excellence days, is all the more pleasing. Other clubs have been trying to sign our keepers for a couple of years and both Helen and Rachael have remained loyal to Sunderland. Obviously Helen Alderson has been a regular in the England set up for a few years now, but Rachael Laws call up just goes to show you dont have to be wearing the clubs first team jersey to earn selection. Rachael has been in the squad a couple of years and I asked the scouts to watch her again in an FA cup game last season. They were suitably impressed with her display on that occasion and others within the reserves and this is the result.
As a club, our plan is to gain promotion, hopefully in the next couple of years. We need to establish ourselves in the top flight if we do gain promotion, and in order for this to happen, two quality keepers are essential. History shows that the most successful clubs have two very good keepers competing for the shirt. If its good enough for Arsenal, Everton and Leeds, then I feel we should follow their lead.
Hopefully both players will enjoy their week away with England and cement their place in the squad. Well done girls".
