Sunderland Reserves progress to the next round of the League Cup with a 2-0 victory at Sheffield.
A break from league action saw Sunderland Women Reserves travel to Sheffield FC for a league cup encounter. Overcast skies and damp conditions greeted the team, but the 3G playing surface was in a sheltered location so the prevailing wind did not affect the game.
It was a nervous start from both teams, but Sunderland were enjoying the bulk of the possession but initially their passing was not of the usual standard. Sunderland quickly improved however as they became more comfortable in possession - playing with confidence from the back.
The Sunderland wide players, Nicola Devine and Jordan Atkinson were causing problems for the Sheffield defence, and a succession of crosses from both flanks flashed across goal without any Sunderland player on hand to apply the finishing touch. It was no surprise when Sunderland went ahead however when Abbey Joice drove through the middle of the home sides defence and deliver a crisp shot into the corner of the net.
Sunderland continued to press during the remainder of the half and more chances went begging as they sought to increase their lead. Sheffield rarely threatened however, but Sunderland were unable to turn their superior possession into more goals and the first half ended 1-0 to the visitors.

With the second half underway Sheffield showed their intention to press and chase much more than they did in the first half, and Sunderland found they had less time on the ball. Sunderland stood up well to the extra pressure and whilst chances were harder to fashion Sunderland continued to look threatening in attack as they tested the home keeper on several occasions.
A succession of corners caused problems for the Sheffield defence, whilst the Sunderland defence dealt comfortably with any attacking threat from Sheffield. Sunderland extended their lead on 65minutes when Nicola Devine crashed a shot off the underside of the bar and Jane Riddell was on hand to head the ball home but the referee ruled the goal in Devine's favour on 65 minutes.
Sheffield battled hard to get back into the game but Sunderland were defending well all over the pitch, and the game ended with a 2-0 victory and progression into the next round of the cup for Sunderland Women's Reserves.
