READING HIT FOR SIX ... SUNDERLAND WOMEN 6 - 0 READING LADIES FC

Sunderland Ladies continued their impressive league form as they convincingly crushed Reading Ladies 6-0 in the Women’s Premier League Northern Division. The game was over as a contest by half time with the home side five goals to the good.

Sunderland pressed from the start as Kelly McDougall went close before a Sophie Williams effort was turned behind for a corner. Good link up play between Vicky Greenwell and Williams led to a half chance for Natalie Gutteridge as the home side dominated. The breakthrough came on 12 minutes following a flowing move down the right. Abby Holmes and Jordan Nobbs began the move which ended with Williams rifling the ball into the roof of the net.
A strong run down the right by Lucy Staniforth saw her shoot narrowly wide but Sunderland were not to be denied when they grabbed a second after 15 minutes.  The home side were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box and McDougall hit a powerful shot into the top corner. Reading had their first attack moments later but Keeper Rachael Laws gathered comfortably. The Wearsiders broke quickly down the right with Lucy Bronze feeding Staniforth whose goal bound effort was blocked. The third goal arrived after 21 minutes when a Gutteridge shot was beaten away only for Nobbs to follow up and drive home a powerful shot from the edge of the box. The visitors almost pulled a goal back after 24 minutes when Osmond fed Caswell who brought a great save from keeper Laws and Steph Bannon completed the clearance. Sunderland broke quickly and Williams shot inches over before a McDougall snapshot came back off the post. The fourth goal came on 30 minutes as Williams streaked clear of the defence to score her second of the game. Gutteridge and Williams both had goals ruled out before Sunderland confirmed their dominance with a fifth in the 39th minute. Demi Stokes worked space on the left and crossed for Staniforth to drive home at the back post.

Sunderland continued to push forward at the start of the second half and got their sixth goal after 51 minutes. Williams brought the ball down the right and crossed for Nobbs who knocked back across the face of goal for Holmes to power in a header. Further efforts by Williams, McDougall and Nicola Devine went close as Reading were reduced to  spectators. Following this the pace of the game visibly slowed as the Wearsiders coasted through to the final whistle with few further goalmouth incidents.
