Sunderland Women's reserves were on the road once more as they journeyed south to play Nottingham Forest Ladies Reserves. It was a bright calm day that greeted the players when they arrived at Carlton Town FC, and the playing surface whilst being slightly heavy in places was in good condition.

Sunderland began in confident mode, and there were some early threats to the home defence as Jordan Atkinson was unlucky not to benefit from a good through ball from Hannah Caldwell. This was a sign of things to come as Laura Hockaday and Erin Middleton both had shots saved by the home keeper when put through.

The Forest defence was breached on 25 minutes when a perfectly weighted pass from Abby Joice saw Jordan Atkinson smash the ball home from 18yards. With the Sunderland midfield dictating play, Jordan Atkinson set up Laura Hockaday to open her account as Sunderland went 2 up from another well judged pass and confident finish.

Sunderland's rearguard looked to be dealing effectively with the forest attack, with Ellie Christon and Lisa Ryan in particular looking very assured whilst Mega Beer and Laura Venison were defending well in wide areas. Half time came with the Reserves 2-0 ahead and perhaps disappointed not to have more goals to show for their hard work in the first half.

The second half got under way as a more purposeful Forrest side became very direct - attacking quickly at every opportunity. On 55 minutes Sunderland failed to deal with a long clearance out of defence, and a shot from 18yards saw Jane Riddell beaten as the home side pulled a goal back.

Sunderland rallied however, and once more took control of the game in midfield. Following some good hold up play by Laura Hockaday - her cross into the six yard box was turned home by Abby Joice on 62 minutes.

Very much in the ascendancy, Sunderland made it 4 0n 75 minutes when more good work by Jordan Atkinson saw her play a delicate pass into the path of Laura Hockaday. She still had work to do but she held off the defenders challenge and rounded the keepper before slotting home a well deserved second goal.

Hannah Caldwell and Lyndsey McCubbin, were holding things together in midfield as they nullified any threat from Forrest who were being restricted to long range shots that failed to trouble Jane Riddell. Forest went close towards the end when a glancing header at goal brushed the post, but Sunderland closed the game out in a confident manner taking all three points in a well deserved 4-1 victory.
