Sunderland 4 Manchester City 0

Sunderland Ladies progressed to the quarter-final of the FA Cup following an excellent 4-0 victory over Manchester City at the Hetton Centre. Leading goal scorer Beth Mead struck twice, with further goals from Sophie Williams and Captain Stephanie Bannon sealed the victory for the Lady Black Cats.

The opening few minutes began tentatively, but the home side soon got a foothold in the game with good possession leading to a ball over the top by Keira Ramshaw, but Andrea Worrall in the City goal came to collect under pressure from Mead. Further patient build up play resulted in a Williams run down the left, but her dangerous ball into the area was well cleared by the City defence.

Sunderlands first real opportunity at goal started at the back, as Bannon intercepted a short City pass, before linking well with Rachel Furness and Williams, but were again denied by Worrall. Abbey Joice was then denied by the post from distance, following good work down the left by Williams and Vicki Greenwell.

Manchester Citys then had their first threat at goal, as a dangerous ball into the area was put behind by Greenwell. The resulting corner was punched clear by Rachael Laws and the ball landed at the feet of former Sunderland striker Sarah Danby, but her effort was fired over the bar. It was the home side that deservedly took the lead in the 39th minute, as Williams ball into the area was bravely attacked by Mead and her diving header flew into the corner on the net.

The goal sparked the Wearsiders into life as great intricate play between Ramshaw and Joice saw Meads effort just clear the bar. The pressure again paid off as Sunderland doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time. Furness played the ball out to Williams on the left, who cut inside and unleashed a spectacular strike into the top corner from a tight angle.

HALF-TIMESunderland WFC 2-0 Manchester City Ladies

The home side continued where they left off in the first half as Williams effort looked destined for the top corner, but Worrall was again on hand to tip the effort over the bar. The prolific Mead grabbed her second and Sunderlands third of the game in the 51st minute. Furness delivered a great ball to the far post, Ramshaw played the ball back across the area and Mead was on hand to put the ball into the net from close range.

Moments later the fourth goal arrived following a long free kick by Greenwell which found last weeks match winner Bannon unmarked in the area to nod the ball home for her second goal in two games. Sunderland continued to work the ball well and Worrall again denied efforts from Ramshaw and Mead.

Manchester City went in search of a way back into the game but a solid defensive display by Gemma Wilson and Bannon limited any real chances. Sarah Buffell came closest for the away side as her shot cannoned back off the crossbar, however, this provided an opportunity for Sunderland to hit City on the break with Mead firing wide and McDougalls effort was sent over the bar. At the other end, a good ball into the area was well cleared by Megan Beer and the rebound fell to Nicki Harding whose effort looked destined for the net, only for Beer to again be on hand to head the ball off the line.

Im delighted to be in the quarter finals again. We were well organised out of possession and a constant threat in possession. Everything I asked for was delivered. The girls were magnificent from back to front.
