As well as their playing commitments, Sunderland WFC players are strongly committed to working in the community and supporting other
local clubs.
Recently the club were asked by Abbeytown WFC in Cumbria, if a member of the Sunderland squad would be able to
attend their Presentation Night. Gemma Wilson, a first team centre half, attended the event which was held at Wheyrigg Hall
Hotel, on behalf of Sunderland Women and presented awards to Abbeytown under 10’s, 12’s, 14’s, 16’s and Womens teams, before socialising
with the girls at their after awards disco.
Gemma kindly donated her signed shirt that she wore in Sunderland’s FA Cup Semi
final victory against Chelsea during the 2008/09 season. Gemma explained, “All of the girls at Abbeytown and the management,
were very welcoming and have achieved a lot for such a small town. I had a great night and met some really nice people and I wish
them all the very best for their forthcoming season and will be looking out for their results in the future. I would like to say a
big thank you to everyone at Abbeytown WFC for their hospitality.”
Neale Wilson From Abbeytown WFC, spoke of a highly successful
evening..... "We are very grateful to Sunderland WFC and especially to Gemma, who was a wonderful ambassador for the club. It really
meant a lot to the girls to have someone like Gemma there. She was lovely."
