Sunderland started brightly creating a number of chances and putting Forest under early pressure. The breakthrough came in the 6th minute following a penetrating through ball from Sophie Williams which set Beth Mead clear on goal. Although her shot was partially blocked by goalkeeper Claire Wallhead she could not prevent the ball from crossing the line. The visitors were well on top and following a succession of corners Sunderland increased their lead in the 8th minute. Kelly McDougalls corner was partially cleared to Sarah McFadden on the edge of the area and she crashed the loose ball high into the net. The home side were restricted to the occasional breakaway and their only meaningful attempt on goal was easily dealt with by Helen Alderson after 32 minutes. Natalie Gutteridge, Rachel Furness and Williams all had opportunities to extend the lead but a combination of good goalkeeping and a strong defence kept the score at 2-0 at the interval.

The second half began with Forest enjoying their best spell in what was a much more even affair. On 55mins a great shot by Rebecca Anderson was brilliantly saved by Alderson as Forest looked to get a foothold in the game. Strong defensive work from Abby Holmes, Steph Bannon and Nichola Devine kept the home sides opportunities to a minimum. Sunderland stepped up a gear and again took control of the game with many chances being created as Rachel Lee, McDougall and Mead all went close. There was controversy in the 87th minute, when Mead went through on goal, only to be upended by a defender, but the referee only awarded a corner. Forest continued to push forward introducing 3 substitutes to try and salvage something from the game, but it was always Sunderland who were in control.
