Sunderland Res 2 Sheffield Res 0

Sunderland Women's Reserves entertained Sheffield Women's Reserves in the Reserve League Cup and they progressed to the second round with and an assured home performance. Making several changes to last week's line up, Sunderland started brightly and looked confident in possession, as they passed the ball extremely well. As in previous games, Sunderland looked dangerous in wide areas with Sophie Halliday and Becca Olley always an attacking threat on the left, and Becca Hunt offering an outlet from the right. All too often however our approach play seemed to elude our forwards who nonetheless were working tirelessly to create chances and also to close down when possession was lost. Chances seemed to be going begging however, and with the Sunderland defence looking assured and composed it seemed that the approach of half time would give Sheffield some respite from defending. However on 41 minutes Sunderland got the breakthrough they deserved when Becca Hunt was on hand to turn the ball home when under pressure inside the Sheffield penalty area. The half time lead was no more than Sunderland deserved, although Sheffield deserve credit for the way they worked to defend as a team.

Sunderland began the second half in a similar vein, but were forced to reshuffle their defence following an injury to Sophie Halliday. Injury also forced the withdrawal of Becca Olley after 60 minutes and her replacement Beth Gardener playing in an unfamiliar wide left role added to Sunderland's tally with a well executed shot from 18 yards after 76 minutes. On the day Sunderland could have added more to their tally as several players all went close, but we are delighted to progress to the next round following an excellent performance on the day. Credit is due to Sheffield, who kept going throughout and we wish them all the best for the remainder of the season.
