Sunderland 1 Aston Villa 2

They lost their home clash against Aston Villa despite dominating from start to finish.  The Wearsiders created countless chances but it was Villa who took the lead mid way through the first half. Beth Mead grabbed her ninth goal of the season seven minutes from time to equalise but in injury time a speculative long ball was met with hesitancy between Keeper Helen Alderson and Nicola Devine in the home defence and Emma Follis was left to poke the winner home.

Sunderland began strongly with Rachel Furness crossing from the right for Sophie Williams to head narrowly wide at the far post. Beth Mead and Rachel Lee combined well to set up Natalie Gutteridge but her effort flashed wide. Mead and Williams were just off target before Kelly McDougall volleyed against the bar from the edge of the box. It was all one way traffic as the Villa goal bore a charmed life and chances went begging. Nicola Devine’s dangerous cross just eluded Mead and the ball was scrambled away before being cleared upfield.  Aston Villa won a corner from their first attack and scored from the resulting kick. As the ball swung in from the left it evaded the defence and Ini Umonotong hooked the ball home from close in. This obviously shook the home side and Villa won a string of free kicks making the most of their physical presence to put Sunderland under pressure for the first time. Williams got around the back of the visitors defence but the danger was cleared by the impressive Jade Richards. At the other end Umonotong found herself in the clear but pulled her shot wide. Just before the break good work by Lee found Furness but her shot sailed high over the bar.

Sunderland powered forward from the kick off and McDougall set Mead free down the right. She crossed and found Gutteridge in the clear but somehow the striker’s effort flew over the bar from six yards. Williams, Furness and Abbey Holmes all went close as the visitors were content to sit back and absorb the pressure. A strong run by Holmes fed Vicky Greenwell whose shot from 25 yards was well held by Naomi Bruton in the Villa goal. Following yet more home pressure Mead turned well in the box but screwed her shot wide. Kiera Ramshaw then went through on goal but her shot was blocked and the ball broke for Furness who saw her shot go just off target. The equaliser finally came in the 83rd minute when Greenwell won the ball in the middle and fed Williams who set Mead free. The striker confidently outpaced her marker before hitting an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net. Moments later Ramshaw laid the ball off to Greenwell who thundered a shot narrowly wide. As the game entered stoppage time Villa hit a long hopeful ball into the Sunderland area and as Alderson and Devine waited for each other to clear Emma Follis nipped in between to poke the ball into the net and give the visitors an unlikely victory.

Manager Mick Mulhern could not hide his disappointment...” We are all devastated to lose a game that we should have won comfortably. Obviously it was an awful error in injury time which gifted them the 3 points. They must have thought Christmas had come early. We had enough good opportunities to bury Villa but it wasn’t to be and we simply ran out of time.”

Sunderland are back in action on Sunday 30 October when they entertain Watford at the Hetton Centre (Eppleton CW) kick-off 1pm.  Next Sunday's game has been postponed due to Cardiff players being involved in an international for the Wales Senior Team.

Sunderland Ladies came down to earth with a bump following last week’s great result which took them to the top of the National Premier League.
