League leaders Everton had held Sunderland to a 2-2 draw in their last encounter, and Sunderland's recent good run of form had put the reserves in confident mood for the game. On a heavy pitch at Leyburn Grove, Everton elected to attack with the strong wind at their backs and it proved to be a decisive move as they took the lead within two minutes of the start. A foul on the Everton right wing gave them a free kick, which was cleverly flighted into the Sunderland box, and as the defence hesitated Danielle Turner forced the ball home from close range. Sunderland had barely recovered from this setback before Everton doubled their lead just two minutes later - once again, a free kick was conceded but this time on the Everton left and an in swinging cross was converted by Nikita Parris to give the visitors a dream start. At last Sunderland rallied and they tried to impose themselves on the game, but the conditions were making it difficult for Sunderland to retain possession. Everton added a third on 28 minutes when possession was lost in midfield, and Kerri Welsh produced a confident well struck shot that gave Katie Luther no chance.

The second half got underway with Sunderland having the advantage of the wind behind them as they set about trying to break down the Everton defence. A series of attacks down the Sunderland left, led to to succession of corners but Sunderland were unable to convert. Everton however were looking dangerous on the break, and the woodwork twice came to Sunderland's rescue as Everton threatened to increase their lead still further. As the second half wore on Sunderland pushed more players forward in a desperate attempt to claw their way back into the game, but it was not to be their day as Everton ran out comfortable winners.
